Training and Technical Assistance

H-1B Grantee Conference

An H-1B All Grantee Conference will be held on December 2-4, 2003 in St. Petersburg, Florida bringing together 200 representatives of H-1B Technical Skills Training Grants. The purpose of the conference is to: (1) fulfill the GAO report recommendation to bring H-1B grantees together to share successful strategies and encourage networking; (2) provide information to grantees for program enhancement in areas such as service delivery and sustainability strategies, fiscal and administrative management, data collection procedures, performance outcomes, and the new H-1B EIMS system; (3) launch the new "H-1B Grantee Connectivity Initiative," in which grantees will be able to communicate in a variety of ways after the conference is over; (4) gain first hand knowledge of grantees’ technical assistance needs through a plenary session using an interactive polling device, and (5) offer educational workshops on topics that provide a broader context for H-1B grants such as high skills training, common performance measures, WIA reauthorization, and the integration of H-1B programs into the Workforce Investment System.

Working for America Institute National Conference

The AFL-CIO’s Working for America Institute held its annual National Conference on November 9-12 in Milwaukee, WI. The conference workshops conference were organized to spur greater involvement from labor representatives in shaping workforce development issues in their local areas. The work of Local and State WIBs that have active labor representation on the boards were highlighted. The Milwaukee Workforce Investment Board made a presentation on its success in building partnerships, including collaboration with a local university to provide innovative Information Technology training for youth. The conference also featured an "Ask DOL" session led by Maria Flynn. Areas of participant interest included changes in TAA, WIA links to economic development and job retention, self-sufficiency and job quality standards, training for older dislocated workers and statewide partnerships. Federal Interagency Partnership Meeting

On November 12, OWI/Office of Adult Services ES staff attended a "Federal Interagency Partnership Meeting" hosted by HUD. The purpose of this meeting was to enhance partnerships between agencies that serve Migrant and Seasonal Farmworkers (MSFWs) and underserved areas along the U.S.- Mexican border known as colonias. It is envisioned that these partnerships would lead to better service delivery relative to housing and community development. USDA, EPA, FDIC, FHLB, HHS, Census Bureau, DOJ, GSA, NAD Bank, and SBA were also in attendance. Contact: Erik Lang (202-693-2916; lang.erik@dol.gov)

GovBenefits.gov Site Now Includes Information on 48 State and 419 Federal Programs

The Department of Labor, in conjunction with the Office of Management and Budget, has announced the launch of a new version of GovBenefits.gov, a Web site developed to serve citizens as the first government-wide resource for citizen benefit information and eligibility screening.

In addition to all citizen-focused federal benefit programs, this new version of GovBenefits.gov also includes state benefit programs from: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota and Utah. The State benefit program information that can now be found on the site includes: Food Stamps, Medicaid, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and State Children`s Health Insurance Programs. With these enhancements, GovBenefits.gov has taken concrete steps toward providing a single place for both Federal and State benefit program information. Contact: www.GovBenefits.gov
