|SUBJECT||:||Additional AT&T Layoffs - Working with The Alliance|
Purpose. To transmit to States additional information regarding AT&T layoffs nationwide.
Background. Training and Employment Information Notice (TEIN) 44-93, dated March 29, 1994, and TEIN 44-93 Change 1, dated June 8, 1994, alerted the States of planned layoffs by AT&T, and to efforts by the Alliance for Employee Growth and Development, Inc. (The Alliance) to assist employees affected by the layoffs.
The aforementioned TEINs alerted the States that throughout 1994 and into 1995, AT&T would be closing at least 39 Operator Service Centers in 31 States, affecting several thousand employees. We encouraged the States to work cooperatively with The Alliance representatives.
Information on Additional Layoffs. Attached is a list of recently identified layoff sites across the country, along with the numbers of workers that were to be laid off. These layoffs affect over two thousand workers. As noted in the upper right hand corner of the attached list, all layoffs on the list were to have been effective by the end of April, 1996.
Action. States should alert local offices and grantees where additional AT&T layoffs are occurring and share this TEIN with them. States are asked to continue their efforts to work cooperatively with The Alliance representatives to promote training and job placement efforts for these laid off workers. (A list of State JTPA Liaisons, State Employment Security Administrators, and State Worker Adjustment Liaisons has been shared with the Alliance.)
Inquiries. Questions concerning this issuance may be addressed to Eric Johnson in the Office of Worker Retraining and Adjustment Programs on (202) 219-5577.
