UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Oct. 27, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 327,000, a decrease of 6,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 333,000. The 4-week moving average was 327,000, an increase of 1,750 from the previous week's revised average of 325,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent for the week ending Oct. 20, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Oct. 20 was 2,588,000, an increase of 65,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,523,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,537,500, an increase of 13,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,524,500.  

UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 301,317 in the week ending Oct. 27, a decrease of 6,305 from the previous week. There were 301,079 initial claims in the comparable week in 2006.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during the week ending Oct. 20, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,246,741, an increase of 71,675 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 2,087,657.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Oct. 13.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,492 in the week ending Oct. 20, an increase of 117 from the prior week. There were 1,814 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 27 from the preceding week.

There were 15,829 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Oct. 13, an increase of 1,780 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,953, an increase of 1,110 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 13 were in Puerto Rico (2.7 percent), Michigan (2.6), Alaska (2.5), New Jersey (2.4), Arkansas (2.3), Pennsylvania (2.3), California (2.2), Oregon (2.2), Rhode Island (2.2), and South Carolina (2.1).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 20 were in California (+7,027), New York (+2,590), New Jersey (+973), Wisconsin (+953), and Indiana (+908), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-4,992), Ohio (-1,747), Maryland (-1,184), Illinois (-984), and North Carolina (-966).
